ANSWER · VIXI TEAM

n8n vs Zapier vs Make: which should a growing business use?

Zapier is the simplest for low volume. Make is a middle ground. n8n is usually the cheapest at scale and the most flexible for complex or AI-driven workflows.

The short answer

Use Zapier for a few simple, low-volume automations. Choose n8n when volume grows or workflows get complex: it bills per workflow execution instead of per task, and a self-hosted instance costs a flat $20–$80 a month. In migrations we have run, a 50,000-task workload of about $1,200 a month on Zapier ran on a $79 self-hosted n8n server.

When a migration makes sense

Migrate when the monthly bill grows faster than the business, when you hit task quotas, or when you need logic the tool cannot express. There is no import button: each workflow is rebuilt, tested side by side for three to seven days, then switched over.

What can stay where it is

Low-volume, low-risk automations can stay on the current tool until the core workflows are stable on n8n. Move the expensive, high-value workflows first.

Frequently asked questions

Does n8n have to be self-hosted?

No. n8n also offers a hosted plan. Self-hosting is cheaper at volume but needs backups, updates and monitoring.

How many workflows has VIXI built?

Our team has built more than 200 n8n workflows, including migrations from Zapier and Make.
